Generally speaking, yes. If you compose well so that you won’t have to crop the image, you will be quite satisfied.

However… Buy a decent brand of camera. In the 5 MP range, there are a lot of cameras out there that are pure junk. Check out the camera you are interested in buying on http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ If they don’t list it, it’s probably not worth considering.

Yes. It will make acceptable 8 x 10s and you can crop a little in 4x6

5 megapixels is the point at which a digital sensor starts to match the quality of 35mm film. As long as you don't need to crop your shots too much, you will find them very presentable. Professionals can even make good looking enlargements out of 5 MP photos, so yes 5MP is fine.

Any camera worth $40 or less is crap. Sorry, that’s just the way it is. I bought my daughter a Barbie digicam a few years ago for $30, and it was terrible. The pictures (even the ones I tried out) were blurry — so low quality that it wasn’t even fun.

To answer your other question, I bought my daughter a $100 digital camera (on sale before Christmas, an HP I think) when she was 11. She has taken good care of it (and in fact, hasn’t used it in ages because the fun wore off, I guess). Before that, I’d let her use mine if I was right there, but there’s no way I’d let her go somewhere with it.

I have the sony dsc t70. It’s awesome it’s really sleek and it’s just a basic point and shoot camera. The pictures come out looking AMAZING, they’re really sharp. It also takes awesome video and the part I love is that it’s a touch screen. I got it for $300…. good luck choosing.
